How Pilates Exercises Can Help You

Recently pilates exercises have gotten very popular. However, you might not know too many specifics about them. Just what are pilates exercises, for instance? Pilates stands for the Pilates Method, developed in the early part of the 20th century by Joseph Pilates. He referred to this method as Contrology, since he believed that the mind was being used to control the muscles.

Pilates focuses on core muscles which affect posture and balance. Awareness of breathing and spinal alignment are a very important part of this exercise plan. For a long time, pilates exercises weren't particularly popular. However, there are now many discs of these exercises, as well as instructors offering classes. However, this recent popularity also means that if you're interesting in taking up pilates, you'll have to pay attention to the class you're taking. Many under or unqualified people have jumped on the bandwagon.

There are a lot of myths about pilates that can stop you from getting the right benefits from this program. For one thing, many people believe that pilates exercises are derived from yoga. While Joseph Pilates studied yoga, his method isn't interchangeable with that discipline. It can be complimentary to an existing yoga practice, however.

Many people also think that pilates is just for abs. While many pilates exercises focus on the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles, and this can give you great abs, the program can do a lot more. Pilates focuses on structure integration, and the creation of a strong, flexible body. All body parts are meant to be worked in a balanced way.

Some people also think pilates exercises are for wimps, or only for women. In fact, the difficulty level of exercises pilates is adjustable, so that you start with a beginner class, but can move on to some very challenging techniques. Pilates does work well for women, especially those who are pregnant, but that doesn't make it a gender restricted program. Anyone can perform pilates exercises and benefit from them.

Because pilates is a program meant to work the whole body at different levels of activity, it's harder to talk about specific exercises than it might be in other disciplines. Yoga, for instance, has a series of poses that are consistent throughout many traditions. Pilates exercises are many and varies, but they all have one thing in common. They're trying to add strength and flexibility to the major muscles of the body, particularly those related to posture and balance, without emphasizing one over another.
